Organisation: Mauritian Wildlife Foundation http://www.mauritian-wildlife.org/index.php
Who are we? The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF) is a registered charity and the only Non-Governmental Organisation in Mauritius to be exclusively concerned with the conservation and preservation of the Mauritian nation's endangered plants and animals. The organisation works through hands-on actions and is also active on Rodrigues and local islets.
Aims of the Club: To save threatened Mauritian species through the restoration of entire ecosystems. To seek new information through field research, data management, captive studies and scientific collaboration for direct application to restoration methods and management. To share knowledge gained through restoration programmes with fellow Mauritian and international conservationists. To share the joys and benefits of native wilderness and wildlife with the Mauritian people. To secure the future of Mauritian species through income generation and sound management of human, fiscal and capital resources..
Membership/Donations: We do not have formal memberships but donors/supporters who in return get newsletters and if local they get some advantage ie. tickets to Ile aux Aigrettes, visits to sites etc.
Publications: A near-monthly email newsletter packed with latest news is sent out to anyone who requests it (subscribe through our website). The Mauritian Wildlife Foundation launched two books in 2006: "The Native Plants & Animals of Mauritius" & "A guide to the plants in Mauritius”. These books were funded by the UNDP GEF SGP, Ducray Lenoir Ltd & MSM Ltd.
Conservation: Conservation on Mauritius is one of the World's most successful conservation stories. This is due to MWF's restoration work started in the 1970's, which includes the rescue of the Mauritius Kestrel, the Echo Parakeet and the Pink Pigeon, brought back from the brink of extinction. We develop protocols for the rescue of native plant species and we also work in Rodrigues restoring the flora and fauna and replanting the native forest. MWF has been actively involved with island restoration, in particular on Ile aux Aigrettes and Round Island both of which are endangered biodiversity hotspots of global importance. These conservation efforts will benefit future generations of Mauritians. MWF promotes local capacity building and provides employment through its activities. MWF wishes to remain a strong, vibrant and innovative organisation.
Website: The MWF's website, at http://www.mauritian-wildlife.org, has been recently been re-formatted and contains a wealth of information about conservation projects and work opportunities, updates on breeding programmes etc, as well as a selection of 'wallpapers' to download.
